659 humans and over 400 dogs walked 2 kilometers around SM Mall of Asia on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 to protest animal cruelty and celebrate the signing of the amended Animal Welfare Act (RA 10631), which increases penalties for animal offenders from a maximum of P5000 and/or two (2) years imprisonment under the old law, to P250,000 and three (3) years imprisonment.
“In this year's celebration of World Animal Day, we want to bring to the public’s attention the plight of animals who suffer from abuse and maltreatment, and we encouraged dog-walkers to speak up for them by participating in this event,” said Anna Cabrera, Executive Director of The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), a non-profit, volunteer-based group dedicated to the prevention of animal cruelty.
A volunteer group called “HELP Mandaluyong Animal Shelter (MAS)” garnered the biggest number of participants walking as a group with 70 dog-walkers. “We’re trying to help the local government of Mandaluyong City get enough dog food for its impounded dogs,” says Li An Ascalon, who leads the volunteer group in the daily feeding and cleaning of the MAS dogs. “We’re glad to take part in this event to also raise awareness about the availability of dogs in pounds and shelters so that people can make pet adoption their first option instead of buying from breeders or pet shops.”
Compassion and Responsibility for Animals (CARA) and the Philippine Animal Rescue Team (PART) were the two other dog shelters who got the dog food donations.
