It was a fun mix of cute, scary, advocacy-laden and the downright bizarre in terms of pet costumes as more than 100 pets and their owners trooped to the Century City Mall Event Center on October 26, 2014 for “Scaredy Cats and Dogs : Year 11” – the annual Halloween fundraiser of The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS).
Dog trainer Chardy Ang opened the show with a dance number with his border collie Cheska. He later showed off his other trained dogs including Andi, aspin Kimchi who he adopted from the PAWS Shelter and Toffee, Alpo’s brand ambassador.
A group of ten golden retrievers dressed as members of the Justice League of America held up signs to show their promise to fight for animal welfare. A small dog wrapped in pink body-scrubbing material was a “loofah” and he was carried onstage by his female guardian stepping out of a portable shower curtain. A native cat named Butter, dressed in Godzilla’s trademark dinosaur spikes, was unleashed in a diorama of cardboard buildings set up onstage. Aptly named “Cat-zilla”, she trampled around the enclosure reducing the miniature city into a pile of paper rubble.
“We had a tough time deliberating because there were so many good costumes! We felt a bit sad that we could not give awards to all of them,” said PAWS celebrity spokesperson Carla Abellana. “But like us, everyone is here to support PAWS and its projects for the animals so all those who joined helped raise funds for the PAWS Shelter.”
At the end of the program, the adorable Klondike, a pomeranian dressed as Robin Hood, took home the grand prize as the “2014 Transylvanian Star” while Ayen, a poodle, and her guardian Michael Feria were declared the “Best Ghoulish Partners of 2014” or the best pet and owner tandem for coming as the Italian Carnival King and Queen. All the winners took home prizes from Alpo, Friskies, Century City Mall Cinemas, Frontline Plus, GrabTaxi, McDonald’s, Swell Sweets & Maynilad.
Other celebrities spotted enjoying the fun event were Karylle and Yael Yuson who came with their dogs Lucky & Vicekee, Venice Gutierrez and Phoemela Baranda with daughter Nichole.
