Lyndon, a brown, short-haired native dog rescued from the roofs of Provident Village Mrkna, and Twiggy, who was found shivering on top of a table inside a waist-high flooded barangay outpost in Pinagbuhatan Pasig, was presented by PAWS to the public to represent its 27 animal rescues – all victims of the typhoon. Aside from the 27, there are 23 pet evacuees at the PAWS shelter whose owners will come back for them as soon as they are able to transfer or clean their homes and start rebuilding their lives.
The special mass officiated by Fr. Joey Paras, SDB was also for intention of human and animal victims of Typhoon Ondoy. The Mass ended with a special pledge read out by pet owners to their pets and a pet blessing.
I promise that you will not feel hunger, fear, nor pain. That I will not give you up in times of sickness the way that I know you will stand by me all the days of my life. I will not confine you to a cage or leash. I will provide you with exercise and companionship. I will be responsible for you in a way that my fellow human beings will not be angry at you nor punish you for roaming in the streets. This is my pledge to you, and with the help of God, let me keep this promise."
Organizations championing animal rights in the Philippines set up their booths and showcased their work to the public. Aside from PAWS, these were the Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF), Compassion and Responsibility for Animals (CARA), Earth Island Institute Philippines (EII-Phils), Feathered Friends Foundation (FFF), Network for Animals (NFA), Palawan Animal Welfare Association (PAWA), People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA) and World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF-Philippines).
Also displayed at the venue were YOCard’s “Visuals with Vision” featuring ‘postcard’ entries of amateur graphic designers on the themes “Saving the Seas” for the Haribon Foundation and “Adoption of Stray Animals” for PAWS.
Pet owners and their pets had a grand time striking a pose in the pet photo area – unlimited free souvenirs!
Guests also got a sneak preview of the newest pet portal - Mypetchannel.tv – whose video features and articles are more than enough to catch the fancy of any pet owner who cares about his pet and giving back to organizations that help animals.
The event ended on a high note with animal-loving celebrities and bands come together to raise funds for the PAWS Shelter which has been turned into an evacuation center for the animals displaced by typhoon “Ondoy.”
International star Sam Bradley together with True Faith, Rachel Alejandro, Gian Magdangal, Joey Ayala, Jan Nieto, Aliya Parcs, Harry Santos, Camerawalls, Reklamo enthralled the audience with their voices and their passion for the cause of animal welfare.
The PAWS Booth overflowed with donations in kind (canned pet food, roofed cages, dog shampoo, old blankets and medicine) from mall-goers.
“WORLD ANIMAL DAY (WAD) Celebration at SM Mall of Asia was truly special for all of us – not just PAWS – but the entire animal welfare community,” said Anna Cabrera, PAWS Program Director and appointed Philippine ambassador of WAD.
“The outpouring of support from SM and its customers show us that many people do recognize that animals play an important role in our lives.”
